The Fear of Losing a Child

Yesterday while helping out at my son’s school, the teacher pulled me aside and told me a fellow student, a nine year old girl, died in her sleep last night.

I was stunned. I did the usual, “Oh no, that’s terrible" response. It didn’t start to sink in, till a few moments later as my son was eagerly greeting his fellow classmates. All of them unaware of the tragedy and the depth of sorrow slowly taking over the school, like a black wave. I felt so relieved to see my child standing in front of me, safe and healthy. At the same time my heart broke as I thought what this little girl’s mother is doing at that very moment.

Is she thinking about how her little girl would be entering her class right now, if it wasn’t for being gone? Was she thinking she should have hugged her tighter before leaving for work to teach her own class? Was she thinking she should have gone easier on her while she got after her daughter about putting off doing her homework? All the guilt a mother would feel.

This child’s mother is a teacher in the same school district and her father is a church youth pastor. They are well known and loved in their community and the police to not expect foul play. As expected an autopsy will be performed, but can you imagine the horror of not only finding your child dead in her bed, but then having to answer insinuating questions from the police? Yes, they need to investigate, I do understand that as we all want answers, but I can’t imagine the pain of that experience.

Later, while I worked with individual students at a desk out in the hall, I saw her class walking slowly back from assembly where they were told the devastating news. Seeing her classmates and teachers in tears, with some of the girls so upset that teachers had their arms around them, holding them up was a sorrowful, but touching sight. Seeing other teachers and staff hugging each other in the hallways behind the children, hoping none of the students would see their moments of breakdowns was actually harder to witness.

As I looked back at the little child in front of me who was looking up and needing help with a word, I swallowed hard and smiled through misty eyes. I fought back the tears, saving them for my own moment alone when I could let them flow unhindered.

In fact it wasn’t until the next day did that moment alone where I could finally allow the feelings of sorrow and fear to overtake me.

Emotions have the oddest timing sometimes. Sure I was saddened and a bit melancholy yesterday, but it wasn’t until I was driving home from the grocery store this morning, did my emotions finally decide to bubble up from somewhere deep inside, find their way up to my eyes and begin to flow over like water over a rock cliff.

Like a free flowing stream, once the tears started, there was no stopping them.

I felt the guilt of a parent whose child is still here; I felt the pain of one mother to another of knowing her heart is breaking and how I wish I could gather up all the pieces of her heart and hand them back to her with love. I also felt the fear as a parent feels and hear myself ask the question, “What if that was my child? And I only have one. What if I lose my one and only child?”

See, my biggest fear is losing my child. I have lost many loved ones, including my parents when I was young and it is simply the thing I am most afraid of.

I am a Christian and I pray a lot, but I struggle with trusting God on this one. How do I know He won’t take my child away from me? I pray, I often beg Him not to do that, but I know it’s not up to me to decide when and that scares me.

The greatest gift ever given to me was my son and I know that the gift could be pulled from me in the blink of an eye and I struggle with that knowledge.

Yes, it makes me appreciate each day more and of course, tragedies like this one makes me hug him more and even let  him get away with a bit more because who wants to harshly discipline their child now? Especially when a family is now mourning the loss of their child who would give anything, anything for the chance to get mad at her for something.

We will move on and the memory will fade at this sorrow like they always seem to do, but that nagging fear, that scary emotion that is always right there under the surface like a predator ready to overtake me and devour me, is always there taunting me.

It never goes away.

I fear no hell except for the one no parent should ever endure – burying a child. That IS pure hell on earth.

God, please forgive me for my failing faith in you in this one area. I am filled with faith for you in other areas, just please send Jesus to me to hold me up in my weakness, for you have taught us that when we are weak, He is strong. And I could really use His strength right now.

But I can wait, till you get that little girl’s mother steady under your arm – she needs you so much more I know.

Could You Use Some Extra Money?

That’s kind of a dumb question, isn’t it? Like how many people would say no, they couldn’t use any extra money. But it’s a question I like to ask. I know I can always use extra money.

One of the ways I like to make extra money is helping others and one of the ways I help others is to introduce them to good nutrition and non toxic household cleaners. I introduce them to Shaklee. Products that have helped me improve my health tremendously. Not to mention the money I save!

In the midst of our financial uncertainty I like to tell people about a great opportunity available right now and offer my help to those who are interested in making some money right away.

Shaklee is the #1 natural nutrition company in the United States. Shaklee is strong, doing great and growing as we offer products that people want and continue to use during this economic downturn.  They are products people use every day. We have grown in every recession since the company was founded in 1956 and now is no different.  We are growing and showing people how to SAVE money and how to EARN money now.

Would you or someone you know be interested in learning what a plan to earn money in Shaklee would look like? How it works?  How quickly you can expect to earn? Would you (or someone you know) like to learn how to earn enough money to cover a car payment, your rent or mortgage?

I like working with those who want to create a different financial future for themselves.  And it would be such a privilege for me to help you achieve what you are looking for from your life and work.

We have a path; a process that works.  Since you own your own business, you don’t have to worry about being laid off and losing that income as you would with a job.
Watch our fun, short movie here that help gives you an idea of what we do. If you are interested in learning more, just fill out the info box and you can instantly find out more about it. Here is the site YourFreedom Project. If you are not interested for yourself, please take a few minutes and think of someone who might be able to benefit and pass this message on.

Thank you!

Eating Healthier & Cheaper

November is here and the holidays will soon be knocking on our door. Cooking, eating and finding ways to pay for all that food are on most of our minds.

The price of food is outrageous! You may be trying to eat healthier, but finding the price of it all a bit too much.

We are the only country in the world whose poor are fat and the rich are thin. The main reason is that the cheapest foods available are the over processed, over re-fined, high fat, high sodium, convenience foods. A healthy diet can cost more and when your cash is limited, you go with what you can afford.

So how do we afford to feed our families and eat right at the same time?

Well, it requires a bit of work. It’s really not that much work. It just takes a bit of planning.

We all tend to fall into the rut of making the same meals over and over again and I bet a lot of those meals include pouring some kind of sauce over some kind of pasta. Am I right?

Then there’s eating out. Wow! That is not cheap! And let’s be honest, if we knew and saw how that food was being prepared, we wouldn’t have the courage to eat it. The safest and healthiest way to eat is to fix it ourselves. Somehow knowing who touched our food and knowing it was prepared safely goes a long way to enjoying our meals.

Taking some time to plan out meals ahead of time, collect coupons, shop and stock up when items go on sale and cooking, yes cooking your own meals at home is how to eat right and save money.

This will take approximately 1-2 hours a week. More if your family keeps interrupting you as you try and plan this all out on Sunday evening. Here’s a tip I use: Warn the next person that interrupts you will cause the family to eat nothing but beans and brussel sprouts and do the dishes the rest of the week! Watch how fast they leave you alone.

Now that the kids have left you alone for awhile, take out a simple cookbook, or go online and look at a few simple recipes. Remember to keep the meals simple. Most should be able to be made in less than 30 minutes. Look at the grocery ad for the upcoming week and plan your meals around what’s on sale. Clip your coupons and make your list.

Remember to cook more than what you need for tonight’s dinner. Cooking for four or eight takes about the same amount of time and doesn’t cost all that much more, so cook more and freeze the leftovers. You’ll save money by re-heating leftovers rather than ordering pizza or picking up takeout on your way home. Plus it’s healthier.

When you buy meat, cook it all up at once, divide it up into separate containers, date and freeze. That way, when you have a recipe that calls for meat, you will have the long part, which is cooking it, already done.

Remember to always add veggies or fruit as a side dish. Make it a habit and instruct the kids before they can have seconds of their favorite food, they must finish what’s on their plate first. They may baulk at first, but over time good habits will eventually be learned.

Want to have a quick, easy and affordable convenience food for those nights where there is absolutely no time to cook? Try Shaklee’s Meal Shakes inchocolate or vanilla or our healthy Shaklee180 Energizing Smoothees. They’re affordable, they’re good for you and best of all they’re fast and delicious! Kids love them and they are also portable. Something pizza and drive thru tacos are not.

Shaklee 180 also has their Snack Bars which are great to tide you over till you get home or Meal in a Bars which are complete meal replacements that taste more like cheating than eating.

Oh, and sometimes when we change our diet to better food, our stomachs and digestive system sometimes go into shock. Your body is so happy to have good stuff that it will excitedly purge the bad stuff causing bloating, gas, etc. This is normal and will ease up over time.

To help your tummy feel better and not drive off your friends, try EZ Gest

So see, there are ways to eat healthier, save money and your sanity all at the same time! Talk about multi tasking!

Spice Up Your Holidays with a Shaklee 180® Pumpkin Spice Shake

Love pumpkin pie, but still trying to stick to your diet plan over the holidays? Try this Pumpkin Spice shake recipe to add some variety to your shake. It tastes just like pumpkin pie!

Pumpkin Spice Shake Recipe

2 scoops Shaklee 180 Vanilla Smoothee Mix
8 oz non-fat milk or low fat soy milk
2 tbsp canned pumpkin
½ tsp pumpkin spice
Dash of vanilla extract
Dash of cinnamon
4 – 6 ice cubes
Blend until creamy.

Clean Safely

“The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 150 common household chemicals have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological abnormalities.”*

That’s a scary statement.

With colder weather we tend to spend more time indoors. Since you are trapped indoors with little to no fresh air, you will want to have cleaners that not only work hard, but are safe to breathe, too.

With closed windows and more time spent indoors, the air in our homes can be more polluted than outside. So make sure you choose cleaners likeShaklee’s Get Clean line that work amazingly hard so you don’t have to.

Plus, they are safe for your family and your pets. They contain no noxious fumes, are biodegradable and safe to use around children, pets and those with allergies. They are also extremely concentrated, so a little goes a long way. This saves you a ton of money and less packaging means less in our landfills.

Why choose a toxic and dangerous chemical to have in your home when you don’t have to! See our Get Clean Line here: Shaklee’sGet Clean

Profile - Tori Minder

Tori Minder dreamed of a different life…a life where she could be present for the important moments in the lives of her children. And she wasn’t sure it was possible, until a friend told her about Shaklee.

I have always dreamed of being able to stay at home and raise my children. But when my husband Nic and I found out I was pregnant with our first child we knew that there was no other option for me but to continue working. I continued to teach after my daughter was born and all through my second pregnancy, but I cried most days. I was so afraid I was going to miss all her firsts—the first time she sat up, the first time she stood alone, the first time she walked.

And by the time I came home from work, meetings, late afternoons of grading/planning, or conferences, I was totally exhausted and had no energy for my daughter or my husband. I felt like I couldn’t be a good mom, wife, or teacher because my heart was at home. After my son was born, we decided I wouldn’t return to teaching. I thought my prayers had finally been answered.

But after a couple of months of worrying about finances and finding that our money was running out, my husband and I knew I had to go back to work. I sent in applications to different schools and daycares but I hadn’t heard anything yet. I would often call my friend Kara Sears (Senior Director, IN)to talk because I knew we had the same passion—to be at home with our children.

While I was in Tennessee on a family trip, Kara called me and told me she knew a way that I could live out my passion. As soon as I returned home, I called Kara and met with her and her mom. It was then she presented the Shaklee Dream Plan to me. I kept thinking, “This sounds way too good to be true. Is it?” I talked to Nic when I got home and we thought maybe this is the answer we’d been praying for. We continued to meet with Kara and her husband, Kyle to learn more and discovered that Shaklee could give us the life that we want for our family.

We started building in August of this year and thanks to Shaklee, we are creating a healthier and wealthier life. And we’re also sharing Shaklee with others to help them achieve their own dreams.

That’s it for this month’s newsletter! To learn more about the products or opportunity mentioned here, you can visit our website atToBeHealthyMyShaklee.com or fill out our Contact Form for a free, no obligation Info Packet.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and go ahead and indulge a little. Just remember, everything in moderation, which is better than having to wear elastic pants the next several months!

Tuesdays: Are You Wasting Them?

Tuesdays can be tough. They can be hard to make special. Mondays have their own reputation; Wednesdays are celebrated as the half way mark; Thursdays are just celebrated as Friday eve; Fridays, well they have their own celebratory status, but Tuesdays seem to get lost in the shuffle.

How do you make your Tuesdays special? Do you say you’re too busy? Maybe you have a meeting and two practices scheduled for today after an already busy day of work. There is no time to stop and enjoy Tuesday.

If you have something to do after your normal working time on every day of the week, then you have scheduled too many things in your life. Some people wait till the weekend to relax, but we also need some down time during the week. We need a day of not having to be somewhere during the week as well, especially if your weekends are jam packed with activities, too.

Why not make Tuesday a special no activity day? Of course you can assign any day of the week to be like that. Some people prefer Friday’s for that, which is great, but I think we also need a mini-break earlier in the week. Why not have 2 days of week of unscheduled activities?

I can hear you gasp and laugh at the idea!

If you think there is no way that you could do that with your family’s lifestyle, then it may be time to re-think your lifestyle. We are way too busy nowadays and it is showing in our health – both our physical and mental health.

Our bodies and our minds need downtime, not just at the end, but during the work week as well. We were never meant to go full speed for an extended period of time. Burnout is real and needs to be addressed before it happens. We need to recharge our batteries before we burn them out.

So stop, re-evaluate your lifestyle, trim the excess and take the time needed to enjoy your life. Even though you may be thinking it’s impossible, it truly can be done with a little letting go and re-prioritizing. Make your family’s health and your health, both physical and mental be the priority. You won’t regret it.

Now go and enjoy your Tuesday!

~Don’t forget that nutrition plays a huge role in your health. With today’s busy schedules, it can be hard to get good nutrition fast. We have wonderful meal replacements for both adults and children that are great tasting, healthy and quick. And even cost less than going through the drive through. So save your money and your health and look into our easy meal replacements.

For children, check out our Meal Shakes in both chocolate and vanilla.

For adults, check out our great Smoothees

For both, you will want to try our delicious Meal-in-a-Bars

Monday: What Are You Dreading Today?

Good Morning! Another week. Are you feeling happy or are you filled with dread as this new week gets rolling?

Is there something you are dreading today? Why?

When we dread doing something, whether it be something as small as doing the dishes or as daunting as facing an unpleasant boss, how we perceive our situation will make all the difference in how easy it will be to accomplish.

With the everyday tasks like doing the dishes, the laundry or cleaning the house, taking the attitude of being grateful for the food we have, the many clothes we have or the children that fill our messy homes, causes us to look at those chores in a different light.

If we have lots of chores, chances are we have lots of blessings. As we become more grateful for the causes, the chores become easier.

Maybe you are dreading something bigger, like a work related challenge. If we face a challenge head on, with boldness and do it first thing, then we can overcome it much easier. Most problems or challenges are best dealt with facing them head on, not slinking around them or putting them off.

So make a decision to get the tough jobs out of the way first thing. Then the rest of the day and the rest of your week will be a lot easier. You will also find yourself coming out a bit stronger than when you went in. Be bold today.

What are you going to overcome today?

~Stay healthy as you face your day. We have awesome on the go quick lunch alternatives. Try our meal-in-a-bars. They are healthy, fast and very tasty. So treat yourself. Check them out here: Shaklee Meal-in-a-Bar

A Mother Is...

“A Mother is someone who upon realizing that there are 4 people and only 3 pieces of pie, will flatly state that she never really cared much for pie.”

Go hug your mom for not only the big sacrifices, but also for all the little and unknown sacrifices she made for you. Or say a quiet prayer of thanks if she’s an angel in heaven.
